Looking for an expert....what is this?

This is a strange plant/wild flower/edible? I really need to take this in to the forestry service and see what this is. The top photo is how it looks when it first comes out in the spring. The bottom photo is how it looks today it is sturdy enough to stand through the winter snows. The seed heads look like little pumpkins....funky huh?
