chicken update

Well the sad news is we are down to 3 chickens. We had another dog attack after Thanksgiving and lost most of our favorites. Bill is thinking on a much higher level for security. I want to get a few more in the spring. I will start earlier than we did last year and maybe just 4. The Rhode island Red seems to produce the largest eggs, the Barred Rock does well and the Buff Orpington is the friendliest by far. We get 2-3 eggs a day which is perfect for just us but not quite enough to share. Bill is still cooking and baking a lot. Last night he made some fabulous Monte Cristo sandwiches and Au Gratin potatoes.Tonight he is making what we call Nic's Mom's Salad a delicious mix of lettuce, tomato, peas, cheese and other goodies with a secret dressing. The seed catalogs are pouring in. I love to look at them but I try to buy from our local Northwest Seed & Pet. They carry an AWESOME selection of all kinds of seeds and the prices are fair. We got most of our potato varieties from them. Bill has built a potato box and I am going to still do a few in pots and maybe the back flower bed.
